Why Asian BMI categories are different

The WHO's global BMI categories were built mainly from data on European populations. Research since then has shown that South and East Asian populations tend to face higher health risks at lower BMI values than the standard scale suggests, so the WHO recommends adjusted, lower thresholds for Asian populations, shown alongside the standard scale below.

CategoryStandard WHO / Asian WHO
UnderweightBelow 18.5 / Below 18.5
Normal18.5–24.9 / 18.5–22.9
Overweight25.0–29.9 / 23.0–27.4
Obese30.0 and above / 27.5 and above

The formula, and a worked example

BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For someone weighing 65kg at a height of 165cm (1.65m), the calculation is 65 divided by (1.65 × 1.65), which is 65 divided by 2.7225, giving a BMI of about 23.9. On the standard WHO scale that falls in the normal range, but on the Asian scale, where overweight starts at 23, the same figure is classified as overweight. This is exactly why Gonona BD shows both scales side by side rather than picking one.

Why BMI uses height squared

Weight tends to scale with the square, not the simple multiple, of height across a population, so dividing by height alone would unfairly rate taller people as heavier regardless of their actual build. Squaring height in the formula corrects for this, which is why two people of very different heights but proportionally similar builds can land on a similar BMI value.

FAQ

Which category should I use, standard or Asian?
If you're of South or East Asian descent, the Asian scale is generally considered a better risk indicator. Gonona BD shows both so you can compare.
Is BMI accurate for athletes or very muscular people?
Not really, muscle weighs more than fat, so BMI can overestimate risk for very muscular people. It's a population-level screening tool, not a precise individual health measure.
What should I do if my BMI is outside the normal range?
Treat it as a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis. A doctor can assess your overall health using additional measures like waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood sugar alongside BMI.
