Where these come up

Percentages show up everywhere in everyday Bangladeshi life, a shop's discount sign, the markup on a bill, exam marks converted to a grade, or comparing this month's sales to last month's. The three calculators above cover the three directions the question usually comes from: finding a share of a number, comparing two numbers, and measuring change over time.

The three formulas

What is X% of Y: multiply Y by X divided by 100. X is what percent of Y: divide X by Y, then multiply by 100. Percentage change from X to Y: subtract X from Y, divide by X, then multiply by 100, a positive result is an increase, a negative result is a decrease. All three calculators above use these same formulas, just arranged for the direction you need.

A tricky case: stacked discounts

A common mistake is adding two discount percentages together. A 20% discount followed by a further 10% off doesn't equal 30% off the original price. Instead, apply them one at a time: ৳1,000 with 20% off becomes ৳800, then 10% off that ৳800 is ৳80 off, for a final price of ৳720. That's an effective discount of 28%, not 30%, since the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original one.

FAQ

How do I calculate a discount price?
Use "What is X% of Y?" with the discount percentage and the original price to find the discount amount, then subtract it from the original price. For example, a 20% discount on ৳1,000 is ৳200 off, for a final price of ৳800.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Use the third calculator above: enter the original ("from") and new ("to") values. The result shows the percentage change and whether it's an increase or decrease.
How is a percentage different from a percentage point?
A percentage point is a simple difference between two percentages (going from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage-point rise), while a percentage change describes that same move relative to the starting value (a 50% increase). The two numbers can look very different for the same change.
Do two discounts add together?
No, stacked discounts apply one after another to the already-reduced price, not to the original price added together. A 20% discount followed by 10% off works out to an effective 28% off, not 30%.
Is this percentage calculator free?
Yes, free to use, with no sign-up required.
