Why Bijoy and Unicode look different
Bijoy is a legacy ANSI keyboard/font encoding, created by Mustafa Jabbar, still used across parts of Bangladesh's print and publishing industry. It stores some vowel signs (ি, ে, ৈ, ো, ৌ) before the consonant they visually attach to, and represents many conjunct letters as single custom glyphs tied to a specific font like SutonnyMJ. Unicode, the modern international standard, always stores characters in reading (phonetic) order and displays correctly in any modern font. Converting between them isn't a simple find-and-replace, it requires reordering these pieces, which this tool handles automatically.
Bijoy's place in Bangla computing history
Bijoy is widely credited as the first Bangla keyboard and encoding system to see mass adoption, predating Unicode support in mainstream software by years. As Unicode became the international standard, bodies including the Bangladesh Computer Council pushed for Unicode adoption across government and public platforms, and most modern software, phones, and websites now use Unicode by default. Bijoy-encoded archives (old newspaper layouts, historical documents, older desktop-publishing files) are the main reason this converter exists.
A worked example
Take the Unicode Bangla word "বাংলাদেশ". Converted to Bijoy, it becomes the byte sequence that renders correctly in SutonnyMJ but looks like unrelated Latin punctuation and symbols in any ordinary font, exactly the garbled effect you may have seen when opening an old Bijoy-typed document in a modern text editor. The reverse direction works the same way: paste Bijoy-encoded text copied from an old newspaper layout file, and this tool reconstructs it into standard, portable Unicode Bangla that displays correctly everywhere, including on social media, in modern word processors, and on any website.
When you'll need each direction
Unicode to Bijoy is the direction most people need today: preparing text for older desktop-publishing workflows, some newspaper production systems, or software that still expects legacy Bijoy input. Bijoy to Unicode is usually the rescue operation: recovering old files, digitising archived documents, or making decades-old Bangla content usable on the modern web. If you're not sure which direction you need, look at your source text: if it displays correctly as normal Bangla right now, it's already Unicode, and you'd use the Unicode to Bijoy direction to convert it out.
