Who sets prayer times in Bangladesh

The Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, a government body, publishes the country's officially recognised prayer-time calendar each year, and most mosques follow it with small local adjustments of a few minutes. This tool calculates times astronomically for your chosen city and date using the Aladhan prayer-times service, which is a very close approximation to (but not a guaranteed exact match for) your specific mosque's printed schedule. For Islamic lunar dates and Ramadan calendars, see our Hijri ↔ Gregorian Converter (হিজরি ক্যালেন্ডার) and calculate obligatory charity on our Zakat Calculator (জাকাত ক্যালকুলেটর).

The five daily prayers

Fajr is prayed before sunrise, during the period of dawn twilight. Zuhr falls just after the sun passes its highest point at midday. Asr is the mid-afternoon prayer. Maghrib begins right after sunset. Isha is the night prayer, once the evening twilight has fully faded. Sunrise itself isn't a prayer time but marks the end of the Fajr window, which is why it's shown alongside the five prayers in the results above.

Why calculation methods differ

Different Islamic scholarly bodies define the exact sun angle that marks the start of Fajr and the end of Isha slightly differently, which is why several "calculation methods" exist worldwide, Karachi, Muslim World League, ISNA, Egyptian, and Umm Al-Qura among them. Karachi's method is the most widely used across South Asia, including Bangladesh, which is why it's the default here, but switching methods can shift Fajr and Isha times by several minutes if you want to compare. To synchronize prayers with traditional Bengali solar dates and national festivals, check our Bangla Calendar & Panjika (বাংলা ক্যালেন্ডার) and official Public Holidays List (সরকারি ছুটির তালিকা).

FAQ

Why do the times differ slightly from my local mosque?
Mosques often apply small manual adjustments (a few minutes) for local conditions or community convention. The calculated times here are astronomically derived and are a very close approximation, not a guaranteed match to any specific mosque's board.
Which calculation method should I use?
The University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method is the most common choice across South Asia, including Bangladesh, and is selected by default.
Who officially sets prayer times in Bangladesh?
The Islamic Foundation Bangladesh publishes the government-recognised annual prayer-time calendar, which most mosques base their own schedules on.
What is the difference between Zuhr and Asr timing?
Zuhr begins once the sun passes its highest point at midday, while Asr begins later in the afternoon once a shadow reaches a defined length relative to an object's height, a separate astronomical calculation.
Is this prayer times tool free?
Yes, free to use, with no sign-up required.
