This is a best-effort phonetic engine similar in spirit to Avro Phonetic. Common words are matched directly for accuracy; uncommon or complex conjuncts may need a manual tweak.
How phonetic typing works
Phonetic Bangla typing lets you type using the English letters closest to a Bangla word's sound ("ami" becomes আমি) instead of memorising a separate Bangla keyboard layout. This approach was popularised in Bangladesh by Avro Phonetic, free software from Omicron Lab that made phonetic typing the default way most people type Bangla on a computer today. Gonona BD's tool works on the same underlying principle, directly in your browser with no install required. If you work with legacy publishing documents, convert between fonts with our Bijoy ↔ Unicode Converter. To verify word limits for assignments or essays, use our Word & Character Counter, and to write banking amounts in words, use our Amount to Words Tool.
More examples
Beyond the reference table above, a few common patterns are worth knowing. Doubled vowels often signal a long vowel: "ii" or "I" for ঈ, "uu" or "U" for ঊ. Conjuncts form naturally when consonants sit next to each other without a vowel between them, so "biggan" produces বিজ্ঞান-style clustering. Capitalisation matters for several letter pairs: lowercase "t" gives ত while capital "T" gives the retroflex ট, and the same pattern applies to "d/D" and "n/N". If a word isn't coming out right, try the capitalisation swap first, it's the most common fix.
Tips for typing longer text
For names, place names, and borrowed words, phonetic engines are inherently approximate since Bangla spelling doesn't always map cleanly from English sounds. Type the closest approximation, then correct it directly in the Bangla output box on the right, which is a normal editable text field. For everyday sentences and common vocabulary, this tool's built-in word list handles most cases without needing any correction at all.
FAQ
- Do I need to install anything?
- No, this runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
- Why did a word come out wrong?
- Phonetic typing relies on consistent spelling patterns. Try alternate spellings (e.g. "chh" vs "Ch" for ছ), or edit the Bangla output directly, it's a normal text box.
- What is Avro Phonetic?
- Avro Phonetic is popular free typing software from Omicron Lab that installs system-wide phonetic Bangla typing, working inside any application on your computer. Gonona BD's tool covers the same typing style directly in the browser, without installing anything.
- Should I use this or install Avro Keyboard?
- For quick, occasional typing in the browser, this tool is enough. If you type Bangla often across many different apps (email, chat, documents) installing dedicated software like Avro Keyboard gives you phonetic typing everywhere on your device.
- Why does capitalisation change the letter?
- Several Bangla consonant pairs share the same base English letter but differ in pronunciation, like retroflex versus dental. Capitalising the letter is how this typing style tells the two apart, for example "t" for ত versus "T" for ট.
- Is this typing tool free?
- Yes, free to use, with no sign-up or installation required.
